In 1984 Mrs. Violene O. Sharpe, organizer, convened an enthusiastic group of women in her home to organize an interest group of The Links, Incorporated. After several meetings, the name Suffolk Women’s League was chosen as the name of the interest group.

The mission of the Suffolk Women’s League was to promote, develop and enhance educational, cultural and civic awareness activities within the Suffolk and surrounding communities of Ivor and Smithfield, Virginia. In implementing our mission, the interest group was engaged in rendering services to the elderly and the youth through projects, monetary assistance, volunteerism where needed, networking and coalition building.

On October 12, 1985, the group’s name was changed when its twenty-seven members were inducted into the Links, Incorporated as the 206th chapter of the national organization. Thusly, the new name became Suffolk Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

The event was held at the Holiday Inn-Portside in Portsmouth, Virginia. Mrs. Jacqueline Robinson, Chapter Establishment Officer, and Mrs. Rachel Hill, Eastern Area Director, represented the National Office and participated in the induction ceremony.

The twenty-seven women represented a unique bank of talents, educational and professional experience and a strong commitment to community service. Mrs. Violene O. Sharpe was elected as the first president of the newly formed chapter –Suffolk Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Since its inception, Suffolk Chapter of The Links, Incorporated continues to fulfill its mission as a concerned and committed service organization linked in Friendship and Service. It also aims to embrace and enrich the lives of members and the communities in which it serves.
